Bertel had no idea where they were.
The storm had passed, though the cloying, warm air was still so murky that he could barely see where theyâd been when theyâd lost Edela. Though even if it were clear, he doubted he wouldâve been any wiser.
âI...â he squinted, seeing the workshop theyâd sheltered in again.
Now, he stepped out four paces and walked in a circle, head lowered. And on his next pass, he lifted it to waist height, narrowing his eyes further, desperate to sharpen his vision. On the third pass, he lifted it higher still, catching a glimpse of a man jumping onto a plinth, golden tunic shimmering in the sunlight. Looking up, Bertel was surprised to see the return of the sun, though mainly he saw an enormous blur of orange light seeking to blind him.
Looking back down, he noticed the man was smiling at him.
âSir! Can I help you find what is lost?â
Frowning in surprise, Bertel tapped Siggy, and they hurried forward. âWhy do you ask?â
âBecause I am a man of many talents, but mostly I watch people. And you, sir, are looking for something. Or perhaps someone...â Placing a finger to his temple, he smiled. âHave you ever witnessed magic?â he asked with gleaming eyes.
Bertel was beginning to doubt the manâs motives and he made to drag Siggy away, but the man lunged at him.
âClose your eyes, sir! Do close your eyes! And then turn around!â
Bertel snorted, though overcome with desperation, he closed his eyes and slowly turned around.
Waiting for the man to speak.
âAre you alright, Bertel?â came a familiar voice, and Bertelâs eyes sprang open to Edela, standing before him with that familiar twinkle in her eyes.
âBut I?â Bertel swung around to the man, though he was gone. And now he turned back to Edela, grabbing her forcefully. âOh, Edela!â He hesitated, caught for a moment, as though in his relief at finding her, he didnât know what to do with himself. Eventually, he released her arms and patted her head.
She looked at him in surprise, wrinkling her nose. âAre you sure youâre alright?â
âYes, I... but where have you been, woman?â he snapped. âDisappearing like that? You shouldnât make a habit of it, Edela. We might not always be here to rescue you. It can be quite inconvenient!â
Ignoring him, Edela embraced Siggy. She held up a hand to silence Bertel, wanting instead to hear from the girl.
âI thought weâd never see you again,â Siggy said quietly, squeezing the dreamer. âThat the storm might have swept you away. Or those men. Perhaps they followed us?â She stepped back with tears in her eyes.
Edela wiped them away with a weary smile. âWell, that would be a mistake on their part, donât you think? The danger we pose? Theyâd be wise to think twice before considering such a foolish idea.â She winked at Siggy and turned to Bertel, who had bent down to shake a pebble from his boot.
The words of The Armless One rang in her ears, and she remembered Raymon Vandaal.
